Bullying in the workplace on the rise

More then one third of employees said they were bullied in the last half year, according to a survey of the union 'Unison'. This amount is a double of the last ten years. Unison is shocked.

The reason is probably that the last years managers face more stress to run their business they become more demanding en critical to their staff, this can seem to overcome like bullying for the staff because they aren't used that their manager can't cope with al that stress. This leads to a workplace with lots of tensions. Employees go to an employment solicitor to talk about their manager who 'bullies' them. Employment lawyers claim that the bullying is a mark of rights for dismissal and discrimination.

Why is bullying so increased? Because of the recession, people are dealt with a lot of stress. Managers are bullying their employees because they want to get rid of them and want to lower the costs. THe support groups also feel that more people call a helpline, and sometimes the helpline has to close because of the enormous amount of calls every day.

But sometimes bullying isn't personnal, they terrorize everybody, this is called 'the bastard defense'. It is not a form of discrimination, but it increases daily, and according to academics it isn't a surprise because of the crises and the decline of trade unions.

Because of the harassments and intimidations told by the press more people are more aware of the situation and this encourage people to make use of their human rights.

There has been more tribunal claims in bullying cases but since "bullying" isn't a legal term, there has been a lot of confusion with lawyers because of the jurisdiction of it. This is criticized because the government hasn't a solution for this problem. Althought they promis to come to a solution as they agree that harassments and discrimination can't be done.

  1. I think actual bullying at a workplace is totally wrong, some work is already hard to cope with because of stress, so bullying someone personally is just childish.

I also agree with Evy; a lot of people think they are bullied, but maybe this is just how their boss reacts. They can't just think because he is acting strict, that he is in fact bullying.

But if people actually do get bullied, they should talk about it, or else it will only get worse
