The best (and worst) job in the world

What would be the best job in the world?

Tourism of Queensland, Australia announced the answer last year. An application for "Island caretaker" got worldwide attention and more than 34 000 people responded. A great media stunt to help promote the Islands of the Great Barrier Reef. Eventually Ben Southall, a charity fundraiser from the UK, won. He only has to work six months, good for 80 000 Euros each month. His tasks: exploring the islands, reporting by blog posts, cleaning the pool, feeding the fish... Getting jealous?
source: http://www.islandreefjob.com/ With this in the back of my head I wondered what are the other jobs that are seen as best and worst jobs in the world.

I bumped into the Jobs rated report from CareerCast.com which had already defined the 10 best and worst jobs of 2010.Several jobs were compared across industries, skill levels and salary ranges.
The 5 key measurement criteria that were used were: stress, working environment, physical demands, income and hiring outlook.

An actuary, a person who interprets statistics to determine probabilities of accidents, sickness, death, loss of property etc.surprisingly scores first! It might not be the most glamourous or best paid job but an actuary scores the most consistent on the 5 criteria. It offers good health, low stress, a pleasant workplace, solid income and strong grow potential.
Software engineer ranked the second-best job for 2010, especially with its high hiring outlook.

Based on the same criteria, a roustabout scores the worst. A roustabout is someone who performs physical labor and maintenance on oil rigs and pipe lines both on and off shore. Because of the isolated location, the hard physical labor, long working days and a low salary a roustabout is the worst job for 2010.

These same problems apply to lumberjack, the number one of 2009 but for 2010 the second-worst job. The tasks of a lumberjack are felling, cutting and transporting woods.

I can understand why some jobs are more desired than others, based on the criterias the survey mentions but I believe it remains a very subjective matter. If you really like your job, you don't mind how good it scores on surveys like this.
Though fantasizing about what for you might be the ideal and worst job remains fun to do.
Feel free to share your ideas!

  1. I agree with Jolien, If you like your job you find it personally the best job. But I also can see that hard working jobs can be seen as the worst job. My opinion: I also believe a roustabout can't be a lot of fun. You are perhaps underpaid and work many hours and on top you probably smell like oil. No thanks I don't think that's my calling :)
